Meet the Shepherdess
Hi folks! My name is Caroline. I am a first-time contract Shepard and a student at Benninton College.
I learned to care for sheep at Wing And A Prayer Farm with Tammy. I am now endeavoring to manage my own flock here at White Rock Farm.
This is a very exciting and daunting new endeavor for me, and I invite you to join me as we learn and grow with the flock.
I believe I was put on this earth to be a regenerative farmer. As an animal lover, I revere and cherish each and every sheep, and I find nothing more rewarding than their management and care.
As a climate activist, I take action by healing the land, from the soil and grass up, through rotational grazing practices, and I encourage my fellow consumers to eat and dress sustainably.

Benefits
It's sustainable: Rotational grazing is regenerative, and it improves soil health! While the sheep graze, they poop; this naturally fertilizes the soil, increasing organic matter and biodiversity. Their little hooves penetrate into the ground, naturally furthering this process, while their nibbling stimulates the growth of grass and forage. You can literally watch your pastures flourish from season to season as biodiversity increases and soil health improves.
It's cost-efficient: because it regenerates soil, you get more out of your pastures in a season and spend less on hay and grain.
It's good for your sheep: the improvement in forage leads to improved sheep health! Not only this, but moving them around frequently can decrease your sheep's likelihood of picking up parasites.
This means healthier lambing, improved wool production, and tastier meat.
Challenges
It's time-intensive: requires frequently moving sheep, whether from permanent fence to permanent fence or with electric mesh that you break down and rebuild with each move; it's ongoing.
Land requirements: It requires a lot of land to effectively rotate a large flock, and smaller flocks are less likely to be profitable.

Our Story
White Rock Farm is a landscape in southern Vermont dedicated to a sustainable future. Located in Bennington, VT, Eunice and Elhanan Stratton established the farm in 1828. Today, its 295 acres remain an active farm for livestock, maple syrup production, hay, and timber.
A stay at White Rock Farm centers around the original farmhouse with four bedrooms and can sleep up to eight guests year-round. The farmhouse's main room was built from old-growth white pine, and its newer wings are fully modernized. Accounting for two-thirds of the property, the farm’s woodlot slopes upward to a boundary with the Glastenbury Wilderness, part of the Green Mountain National Forest. A network of trails crisscrosses this mountainside, leading to the White Rocks overlook, Bald Mountain Trail, and eventually, the Long Trail (the name for the Appalachian Trail in this part of Vermont). In the other direction, the Furnace Brook Walk goes through hemlock and oak groves down to the water where you can wade in the stream before looping back to our barn. The White Rock Farm’s forester indexes each tree on our property of a certain size as part of our sustainable forestry practice.
White Rock Farm is owned by the Cosenza and Sollohub families and managed day-to-day by a team of caretakers. These owners maintain a vision for expansion on the farm, including sustainable forestry, regenerative farming, and improving host ecosystems. Both farming and new buildings will strive for carbon neutrality through green energy applications and well-insulated construction. An expanding hospitality component at the farm will showcase these various forms of stewardship, combining education with the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices.

Whether you're planning a writing retreat, creative workshop, artist residency, wellness gathering, or nature walk, we welcome opportunities to collaborate with fellow creatives.
Guests are invited to slow down, connect with the rhythms of the land, spend time with the animals, explore the surrounding landscape, and immerse themselves in the restorative beauty of rural Vermont.
